What Is Lip Augmentation?

For more voluptuous lips, lip augmentation can be the answer since fillers or a patient’s own fat is injected into the lips, producing added volume and shapelier lips. If fat is used, it is collected through liposuction. With fillers, two of the most popular are hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in the body, or collagen. Though these fillers achieve desirable effects, they are not permanent. While implants can be inserted into the lips for permanent results, South Denver plastic surgeon, Dr. Manish Shah, opts not to use implants because of the risks connected to them. Instead, Dr. Shah’s focus is on safety and patient satisfaction so he aims for a natural, more realistic outcome.

Lip Enhancement Options

  • Fat Filler: Also known as fat transfer, fat deposits are harvested from the patient’s own body by means of liposuction. These collected fats are purified and reinstated with tiny syringes into the lips. The doctor will take the extra measure of reinstating the fat tissues, slowly layering the filler to reshape the lips to meet the patient’s aesthetic desires.
  • Injectable Filler: This is a popular way to enhance the lips in a nonsurgical manner. Fillers are made from substances that are found naturally within the body such the hyaluronic acid or collagen based solutions. The result is realistic and looks and feels natural. Fillers produce beautiful results, however, they are considered short-term and reinjection is advised every 6 months.
  • AlloDerm: Another alternative to silicone is a tissue matrix that is fabricated using the dermis that is harvested and processed from cadavers. This is rendered acellular and so any rejection is very rare. As this is porous, natural tissues within the lips will be able to integrate through it further enhancing the natural appearance of the augmentation. It is inserted the same way a silicone implant is placed.

  • Have thin lips naturally or have age-related volume loss in the lips
  • Have asymmetrical or uneven lips
  • Want to improve the whole face
  • Have overall good health

How Does Lip Augmentation Work?

The surgical technique employed with lip augmentation depends on the type of material used. For implants, incisions will be made on the outer corner of the mouth and the implant is inserted through a tunnel that the plastic surgeon creates. The scars are concealed as the incisions are made along the natural lip line, and the sutures are so fine that once dissolved, they are unnoticeable. For injectable fillers, incisions are not necessary. The substance will be injected using a small, fine needle directly into the lips. During this process, the doctor manipulates the shaping of the filler by putting pressure on the lips where it is needed.

It's essential to follow the recovery instructions provided by Dr. Shah and the Shah Aesthetic Surgery team to achieve optimal healing and the best results. After either a surgical or nonsurgical lip enhancement, your lips will probably feel tender or sore for several days. With a fat transfer, you should expect the area where the fat was extracted to be tender, too. Ice packs and over-the-counter pain relievers are suggested to alleviate any discomfort and swelling. The results of lip augmentation with a dermal filler may be visible for around 3 – 12 months, based on the brand chosen for the treatment. Surgical lip augmentation will give you long-lasting results, but natural aging can alter your results in time. Talk to Dr. Shah about touch-up treatments to freshen up your lips.

How Long Is Recovery After Lip Augmentation?

Lip enhancement using an implant product will generally be performed under general anesthesia in an accredited surgical facility. It is considered outpatient and the entire process is usually concluded within an hour. Injectable fillers require no anesthesia, however, a local numbing medication is usually used. After the procedure, the lips will be swollen and there may be bruising present. This will go away after a few days and the patient will instantly see results of the treatment. It may take a few more weeks for the best results to show.

I Got Really Lucky with my Choice of Dr. Shah - Denver, CO - M history with Dr. Shah goes back to 2004 when he did a complete face lift. He made me look like a better version of myself. The following 3 years found me in Denver twice for liposuction on my flanks and replacement of my breast implants. In all cases I found Dr. Shah to be a thorough and sensitive surgeon.Yesterday I had a temporal brow lift and cheek implants. The most interesting part was it was done as an office procedure with no general anesthetic. I felt no pain and I was awake all the time. The placement of the implants in my cheeks was no worse than stretching my lips as the dentist does to fill a tooth. I was amazed at how easy it was and by the way, I look terrific. I would recommend Dr. Shah to anyone. He is definitely an artist.

I’ve seen Dr. Shah and his team for a few years now! Had a breast augmentation and felt so comfortable from the first time I stepped foot into the office, surgery and post-operatively. I’ve since returned and had my lips filled by Sarah! She was incredible from the moment she returned a phone call/consultation all to injecting and checking in on me consistently after. I’ve referred all my colleagues/friends here and will continue to do so.

I Had an Incredible Experience W/ Just As Incredible Results - I saw Sarah today for lip filler & Dysport. I told her I wanted a subtle, but noticeable difference, all whilst keeping things very, very natural. With her expert eye & opinion, we decided a full syringe of Kysse would be best in achieving the results I was looking for. She stopped in between injections to make sure I was doing okay & to check if I wanted any area(s) revisited. She was extremely patient, accommodating, and gently offered her professional opinion on what would suit me/look best while simultaneously keeping in mind what I wanted. I am so beyond pleased with the final look; I can’t stop looking in the mirror! Sarah - thank you SO much for everything!

Lip lift with Dr. Shah - so far I am very happy with my result! - I had previously gotten lip fillers for the last few years and due to my anatomy they never looked great. I had a long philtrum (15mm) and I wanted more lift of my upper lip which lip fillers were not able to achieved. I opted into going though with a lip lift from Dr. Shah in Denver and so far I am very happy with my result!

About Us
Solid Or Liquid Fillers?

It depends. Both solid implants and injectable fillers have their advantages and disadvantages. Patients need to consider the longevity and maintenance of both options. Solid implants are permanent, while injectable fillers need reinjection every six months. Patients may opt to see the effects a filler will have on the lips first and realize lip augmentation is not for them. The pros and cons of both can be discussed during the initial consultation.

How Real Will It Look?

Technology today is able to design implants that produce great results when it comes to providing a natural look and feel. Optimal results are achieved when implants settle and integrate with the natural tissues of the lips. It is important to find a surgeon who has the necessary skills and experience when it comes to lip enhancement treatment.

Can I Have It Removed?

Yes. Silicone implants are easier to remove than porous implants, but both are removable with a secondary surgery. Liquid fillers go away naturally over time as the substance is absorbed by the body, although a minimal fraction may be retained and may take a while before fully absorbed.

Will There Be Scars?

With implants, incisions are placed along the natural lip line, and the scar will be barely noticeable. Fillers inserted by injection will not have any scars at all. It is important to take extra care of the surgery wounds according to the doctor’s prescriptions to avoid any infections.
