Chin augmentation by Dr. Manish Shah

Chin augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that enhances the contours of the chin while strengthening the jawline. It can be performed to supplement a nose procedure (such as rhinoplasty) to balance and improve the contours of the entire face. Chin implants are usually made of silicone and inserted within a chin pocket to add a stronger jaw line. There are also methods when an autologous approach can be taken using bone from the rib or pelvic area and made to serve as an implant. Synthetic implants come in different sizes and shapes that can be matched to the patient’s preferences and aesthetic goals. At his South Denver plastic surgery office, Dr. Manish Shah offers an initial consultation to help explain the different treatment options to the patient and help them create their unique treatment plan.

  • More balanced overall facial structure
  • Better definition of the jawline
  • Strengthens a weak or recessed chin
  • Lessens the look of large or sagging jowls
  • Increases chin height
  • Decreases the appearance of a double chin
  • Limited or no scarring thanks to hidden surgical incisions
  • Natural-looking results after the implant has settled

Am I A Candidate For Chin Augmentation?

Chin enhancement (augmentation) is an aesthetic option for both women and men. If you are unhappy with the size and shape of your chin and dislike the undefined profile it creates, this cosmetic enhancement can redefine the lower area of your face and neck. It is also common for some of our patients to receive a rhinoplasty with their chin augmentation procedure. This combined approach offers great reassurance for the features of your face to be in balance.

Facial Plastic Surgery for Facial Balancing

During chin augmentation, the implant is positioned over the bone below the lips. A pocket is created to hold the prosthesis in place. Sometimes the bone is shaved to create a groove for the implant. Incisions are commonly placed in two areas that can easily conceal scars – on the underside of the chin or inside the lip, just between where the lower lip meets the gum. The results after this procedure are almost always positive for patients. An experienced surgeon will create subtle results, yet dramatic enough to make a significant improvement to a person’s self-esteem.

During/After Surgery

Chin implant surgery may use either local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the surgical case. The procedure is performed in an accredited surgical facility. It may last up to 2 hours. A liquid diet is usually recommended for the first 3 days to avoid pressure on the chin, as the sutures are sensitive until they heal. The patient is allowed only light activities until the second week. There will be numbness in the area surrounding the implant. While this is normal, the sensation will gradually improve over the coming weeks. As with any implant surgery, it generally takes up to a full year for the implant to settle into position and create a final outcome that is soft, natural, and normal in feeling.

I feel like a new person – As someone of normal weight who has always had a “fat” face, I was tired of trying to contour in a jawline and cheekbones. I tried Kybella in December of 2017 and it did nothing. In addition to this, I have always had a recessed chin and no amount of contour can make a chin magically appear. I finally decided to take the steps and get a tiny bit of liposuction in addition to a chin implant….

Dr. Shah explained the process to me and out of all the doctors I contacted, I chose him due to his professionalism and non-salesy attitude. I don’t want to be sold procedures—I want to be informed and given the ability to decide what is best for me, and this is exactly what Dr. Shah did. Dr. Shah and his colleagues gave me a good idea of what the procedure would feel like and helped me through each step of my procedure and recovery. I am now 2 months out and I feel like a new person.Updated on 3 Mar 2019:Here are some photos! I would say the recovery process wasn’t too painful, but it was not pain free or easy. There was a decent amount of bruising and some pain/numbness from the lipo that still lingers. Everything seems to be healing well, though, and I can’t wait for the final results.

Dr. Shah made me feel comfortable every time I saw him – I had a revision rhinoplasty by Dr. Shah and I couldn’t be happier. I had a rhinoplasty in 2005 that I was never really happy with. As I reached my mid-40’s my nose started to get lumpy and you could actually see and feel the bumps on the bridge of my nose. I wanted to get a revision but didn’t have the time to focus on it, until COVID. I live in a mid-sized city (Colorado Springs, CO) and I believe I went to every plastic surgeon in CS and I could see doctors faces become uncomfortable when I would go in for a consult for a revision. Most of them just made me uncomfortable with how defensive they would become. I found Dr. Shah through research on the internet and went in for my consult. Within 30 seconds of looking at my nose he said “I know how to fix this” and boy did he ever. I didn’t want a drastic change and he gave me that as well. Dr. Shah has a system for minimal bruising that works magic and I had very little bruising after my surgery. Dr. Shah is professional and made me feel comfortable every time I saw him. The staff (especially Brenda) is amazing too. I like them all so much I am going back in several months for a neck lift and and chin implant. I will get pictures posted eventually but if you are considering a rhinoplasty revision – Dr. Shah is AMAZING and you will not be disappointed.

Chin Augmentation FAQs

Can Chin Augmentation Fix a Double Chin?

Chin augmentation is designed to enhance jawline definition and improve overall facial balance. However, if you have excess fat under the chin (commonly called a double chin), liposuction may be recommended in combination with or instead of an implant.

In many cases, removing excess fat alone can significantly improve chin and jawline definition without the need for an implant. For optimal results, patients should be close to their goal weight before cosmetic surgery to ensure long-lasting, natural-looking outcomes.

Is Numbness Normal After Chin Augmentation Surgery?

Yes, temporary numbness after chin augmentation is completely normal. As the implant settles and surrounding tissues heal, patients may experience reduced sensation or tightness in the chin and lower lip area.

This is a common part of the recovery process and should gradually improve over time. Most patients regain normal sensation within a few months, although full recovery can take up to a year as nerves continue to heal.

Will There Be Visible Scars After Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation is performed using carefully placed incisions to minimize visible scarring. Incisions are typically made either inside the mouth or discreetly under the chin.

Because of these strategic placements, scarring is minimal and often not noticeable once healing is complete. A skilled surgeon will take every step to ensure scars are well-hidden and heal smoothly.

What Is the Difference Between Mentoplasty and Genioplasty?

Mentoplasty and genioplasty are both procedures that enhance the chin, but they differ in technique and purpose.

  • Mentoplasty (Chin Augmentation): Uses an implant to improve chin projection, shape, and facial balance.
  • Genioplasty (Sliding Genioplasty): Surgically repositions the chin bone to correct structural concerns or improve alignment.

In some cases, these surgical procedures may be combined depending on the patient’s facial anatomy and goals. While mentoplasty is typically cosmetic, genioplasty can also address functional issues such as bite alignment or jaw structure.
